Tips to Choose Your Major

Starting college means lots of fun and excitement. However, it also means making a lot of decisions. And, one of the biggest choices you’ll have to make is what you want to major in. While majors aren’t set in stone, you’re likely to have a better and more helpful college experience if you declare your major early on. Declaring early also helps you take the courses you need so that you’re not scrambling at the end of senior year trying to fit in the classes you missed. Of course, choosing the right major is easier said than done, but don’t worry. There are some tips that can help you make the best decision possible.

Think About the Future

Take some time to think about the future, not what you’re going to be doing in ten minutes, but what you’d like to be doing in ten years. Where do you see yourself? What kind of life do you live? Try to be as specific as possible when you imagine this future version of yourself. Then, spend some time researching what it would take to get there. Think about how much money you’d need to earn to be comfortable (or better). And, most importantly of all, consider the types of careers that align with your goals and the college majors they best relate to.

Take The Strong Interest Inventory

Did you know that there’s a test that can tell you which careers you’d be great at, and even which majors are best suited to you? It’s called the Strong Interest Inventory, and it’s simple, smart, and stress-free. You just answer some questions honestly, and you’ll get personalized results about your strengths, weaknesses, and what your “best fit” majors and career options are. Even better, if you take the test via qualified education consultants, you’ll have someone to go over the results and explain them and their real-world implications to you.

Dare to Explore

Before you declare your major, spend some time exploring as many different and diverse subjects as possible. Take a variety of classes in high school and, if possible, even in your community. Try new things. Volunteer. The more things you do and try, the more likely it is that you’ll find something you’re truly passionate about. From there, choosing a relevant major should be much easier.

Your college major essentially defines your educational experience and the shape it will take. It can also play a role in crafting your future. So, choose it with great care and thought. Remember, a little effort now can ultimately reap big rewards.
