Tips for Taking the Strong Interest Inventory

Are you thinking about taking the Strong Interest Inventory? Or, maybe you already have a date scheduled to take the assessment. Whatever the case may be, you should know that this test is designed to help you. Its goal is to assist you with discovering who you are and what careers, college majors, and general fields you would likely find success and happiness. As such, there’s no need to feel nervous about taking the assessment. But, if you are or if you just want to have the best experience possible, these tips can help.

Tip #1: Relax.

First things first, when you take the Strong Interest Inventory, relax! While the word “test” might make you feel panic, there’s no need for nervousness. This is not a traditional test. In fact, you can’t even get any of the answers “wrong.” Think of it more as a way for you to get to know yourself. There’s no need to study or panic. Just show up relaxed and excited for the results.

Tip #2: Work with Qualified Administrators

Ideally, your Strong Interest Inventory should be administered by qualified professionals. The best ones will be STRONG certified. This means they have been trained by the test’s creators on how to successfully administer it and discuss the results. If you take the test on your own, you may misunderstand the results or be unsure about how to apply them, which is why professional guidance is strongly recommended.

Tip #3: Be Honest

The Strong Interest Inventory can only do its job effectively if you’re honest in your answers. Don’t answer in a way that you think makes you sound the “best.” Don’t answer based on what other people want for you. Answer in complete honesty. Your results are confidential. You choose who to share them with. As such, there’s no reason to be anything but 100% genuine as you complete your assessment.

The Strong Interest Inventory is a wonderful, helpful tool. If you approach it with an open mind and a willingness to learn about yourself, it should be a positive experience. Follow these tips and try to enjoy the entire process and all that it can lead to.
